Support for non-Sybase data servers

To provide support for heterogeneous data servers, Replication Manager displays the databases, tables, and stored procedures for non-Sybase data servers in a two-tier environment, the same as in the Adaptive Server data servers.

See Chapter 3, “Managing Replication Server with Sybase Central” of the Replication Server Administration Guide Volume 1, for more information about two-tier and three-tier management solutions.

You can create, update, and delete primary and replicate connections. You can also create, update, and delete databases, table and function replication definitions, and subscriptions. The Replication Manager user interface for non-Sybase data servers is identical to the current Adaptive Server interface.

NoteReplication Manager 15.1 and later support table and function replication definitions, and subscriptions, but do not support database replication definitions and subscription for non-Sybase data servers. Replication Manager also supports all connections for non-Sybase data servers except logical connections.

For non-Sybase data servers, Replication Manager uses replication agents and DirectConnect to communicate with the data servers and to act as an interface for Replication Manager. Replication Manager uses an interface server to retrieve metadata from data servers. The replication agent serves as the interface server for primary data servers. DirectConnect serves as the interface server for replicate data servers.

The interface server is not necessarily the server used to replicate data in the environment. For example, when defining an Oracle server both as primary and replicate data servers, you identify only a replication agent as the interface server. This replication agent extracts transactions from the Oracle server. However, DirectConnect is required to replicate data to the Oracle server. Also, if you are replicating from a Microsoft SQL Server, you can identify a replication agent as the interface server. However, you require several replication agents to replicate data from several databases.
